As we were doing travel planning for the next leg to Hawaii and then on to Asia, we were finding that all the flights between Mexico City and Hawaii connected through the United States and at first glance they weren’t good flight options (i.e. either overnight layovers, or super early flight from Mexico City with two stops). However, the 21 hour overnight layover in Phoenix caught our eye and ended up being a huge blessing. Julia has been part of a prayer group with a few World Vision Youth Ambassadors that started during COVID and the YA from the US ’96, who is also part of that group, lives in Phoenix and was willing to host us for a night.
Finally able to meet face to face!
Having been in Latin America for the last 5 months, our friends asked before we arrived if there were any foods that we missed. Raw vegetables, Caesar salad, fresh berries, and ice water were high on the list as they were all things we tended to avoid in places where you can’t drink the water. On the “hard to find” abroad list was true maple syrup. (We did find one small bottle in Lima, Peru but it was priced at $63 CAD and so we had to pass.) Our friends spoiled us with all of our cravings and more!!
It’s not every day that your kids beg for vegetables!
An amazing breakfast of pancakes with Canadian maple syrup (yeah!) and berries along with loads of bacon and eggs!
Not only did we enjoy good fellowship and food, there was the added bonus of a piano available to us. The girls dusted off a few rusty pieces and we got to even sing a few of our favourite songs as a family.
We felt so blessed by our hosts and we were filled, both body and soul, by our short but sweet stop.
