While Annika did the research and planning for Norway, Marika did it for Scotland. She has read a number of historical fiction books about the Scottish Highlands and therefore had a vested interest in researching this area. Our morning was mostly taken up with travels from Norway (that were delayed for an hour or so) but we still had enough time and daylight to drive from Aberdeen in the northeast of Scotland to the highlands area in the northwest of Scotland, with a few stops along the way.
After a quick stop in Inverness for lunch, we went to the north side of Loch Ness.
We did a short hike up to a view point.
The closest we got to seeing Nessie.
From there we headed towards Ullapool and meandered along the coast working our way down to the tiny village of Torridon. This took us through some small narrow little roads and through beautiful country side. We stopped a number of times at some view points and sometimes, we simple stopped the car in the middle of the road to take pictures.
We were at the very beginning of the heather starting the bloom meaning we couldn’t see the full fields of blooms from afar, but when you got close you could get a sense of what it would look like in a few weeks.
Our rock climbing explorer was in her happy place scampering over the boulders.
A lot of the driving was a single lane like this with the occasional “Passing Place” which was at times needed.
Beautiful and rugged country with higher peaks then we envisioned.
