From Scotland we drove south into England on our way to Wales, stopping in both the Lake District and the Peak District.
Lake District – Hallin Fell
The little one lane back roads we travelled in Scotland also exist in England. A lot of them are beautiful and fun to drive but also at times quite challenging, especially coming around and finding a tractor in your way.
A beautiful hike up to nice views of a scenic lake. While hiking up Annika commented that she thought she heard what sounded like jet noises. Ten minutes later, while we were on the top, two fighter jets came screaming down the lake weaving through the valleys. You can just make them out in the two lake pictures above and they looked a lot like F15s to me which I didn’t realize the UK had. Doing a bit of research, there is a joint US/UK NATO air force base which does have F15s so I guess it is possible that they actually were. We were not expecting an air show!
Peak District – Lyme Park (Pemberley)
We next continued south into the Peak District which was used as some of the filming locations for Pride and Prejudice (the 1995 BBC mini-series version). Lyme Park is an old estate that is now managed by the National Trust and therefore open to the public. It is also the film location of the fictional Pemberley, the grand estate of Mr. Darcy. We opted to only do the outside and the gardens since what the movie portrays as the inside, was actually filmed in a different location.
Ramshaw Rocks
These rock formations were also used in the Pride and Prejudice movie.
Longnor (Lambton)
Not far away from Ramshaw Rocks is the small village of Longnor which in the movie was where the Inn of Lambton scenes were shot.
